In the quiet of a Sun City, Arizona morning, a violent tragedy shattered the peace of a small community. Thea Merlino, a 77-year-old female, was killed in her home on June 25, 2024. The tranquility of the early hours was broken by the sound of gunshots, a prelude to a devastating discovery.
Responding to a 911 call about a man with a gun, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at a residence on North Newcastle Drive to a chaotic and horrifying scene. Inside the home, they found Thea Merlino deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. Alongside her was her daughter, 53-year-old Marcia McGrath, who was severely injured but still alive. Before succumbing to her injuries at the hospital, Marcia was able to identify her attacker to the deputies on the scene: her ex-husband, Robert Alan McGrath.
The investigation quickly focused on Robert McGrath, a 60-year-old resident of El Mirage. Evidence and Marcia's dying declaration pointed to a domestic dispute that had escalated to a deadly confrontation. Neighbors had reported hearing a loud noise and then being confronted by a man with a handgun, who was later identified as McGrath. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, as well as kidnapping, armed robbery, burglary, and aggravated assault.
