Her life, however, was cut short in an act of domestic violence that unfolded within the walls of her own home.
On that Friday morning, Katherine had left her job early to return to her Marina Road residence.
It was there that she was shot and killed by her 53-year-old boyfriend, Lawrence Beaute. The couple had been living together for about a year after he relocated from Jacksonville, Florida. In the time leading up to the fatal incident, Katherine had been attempting to end their relationship.
The grim events of that morning were set in motion when Beaute himself contacted the Maine State Police dispatch at 7 a.m. In his call, he admitted to the homicide and declared his intention to take his own life. This prompted a significant police response, with a crisis negotiation team and the state police tactical team descending on the two-story house. For hours, law enforcement surrounded the home, a tense standoff in a neighborhood unaccustomed to such violence. A neighbor's child later recalled hearing what they thought were fireworks around the time of the incident, a chilling testament to the sounds that shattered the morning's peace.
When the tactical team finally entered the house at noon, they discovered the bodies of both Katherine Hunt and Lawrence Beaute on the kitchen floor. It was determined that Beaute had used a 9-millimeter handgun to kill Hunt before turning the weapon on himself in a murder-suicide.
