In the quiet city of Helena, Montana, the lives of two brothers, Robert Alan Mishler, a 40-year-old White / Caucasian male, and his older brother, William Andrew Mishler, were violently cut short on the evening of February 20, 2016. The brothers were found shot to death in an apartment building situated just west of the downtown area, a place that had been a recent home for Robert, who had moved to Helena from Bakersfield, California.
The tranquility of that Saturday night was shattered
around 9:15 p.m. when the sound of gunshots echoed through the building. Law enforcement was summoned to the scene, where they discovered the bodies of the two brothers in a hallway near their apartment. The investigation quickly focused on a fellow resident of the building, 43-year-old Tilmon R. Nungesser IV, who lived upstairs from the Mishler brothers.
Police located Nungesser in the basement of the building shortly after the shooting. He was taken into custody on suspicion of deliberate homicide. It was later revealed that the motive for the tragic killings stemmed from a dispute over noise. Nungesser had reportedly become enraged by what he perceived as excessive noise coming from his neighbors' apartment.
In the months that followed, the legal process unfolded. Tilmon Nungesser IV was formally charged with two counts of deliberate homicide. He ultimately pleaded guilty to the murders of Robert and William Mishler. This admission brought a degree of closure to a case that had senselessly claimed the lives of two brothers who were described as the best of friends, always there for each other in life, and ultimately, together in death. Robert, a culinary school graduate with a passion for creating beautiful and delicious food, was remembered for his quick wit and protective nature over his loved ones.
