In the autumn of 1974, the life of John Wayne Bradford, a 40-year-old male, was violently cut short in a seemingly random act of brutality. On November 4, 1974, Bradford, a house painter, and his associate, Edward Thomas Arnold, were traveling near Donnelly, Idaho, when they offered a ride to a young couple who were hitchhiking. This seemingly benevolent act would prove to be their last. The hitchhikers were Thomas Eugene Creech and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Carol Spaulding.
At some point during the journey, Creech produced a firearm and shot both Bradford and Arnold, ending their lives. Their bodies were later discovered in a barrow pit alongside Highway 55.
The investigation into the double homicide moved swiftly. The blood-spattered car of the victims was found the day after the murders, leading authorities to begin a search for the perpetrators. A few days later, law enforcement located and arrested Thomas Eugene Creech and Carol Spaulding in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. While in custody, Creech's violent history began to unravel, as he was a suspect in other murders across multiple states. During his trial for the killings of Bradford and Arnold, Creech made shocking claims, at one point confessing to as many as 42 murders, though he later revised that number. Despite his litany of confessions to other crimes, he paradoxically denied his involvement in the murders of the two house painters who had offered him a ride.
Ultimately, a jury found Thomas Eugene Creech guilty of the first-degree murders of John Wayne Bradford and Edward Thomas Arnold. He was initially sentenced to death. However, due to a Supreme Court ruling that found mandatory death penalty statutes unconstitutional, his sentence was commuted to life in prison. His girlfriend, Carol Spaulding, pleaded guilty to abetting a fugitive for her role in the events and was sentenced to two years in prison. Creech would go on to commit further acts of violence, including the murder of a fellow inmate in 1981, for which he would again be sentenced to death.
