Robert Dean Marek, a 43-year-old resident of St. Maries, Idaho, was found dead at his home on May 15, 2011. His niece, Melisa Renee Bates, was arrested and charged with his murder.

Bates confessed to shooting Marek and then attempting to burn his body in a fire pit to conceal the crime. The motive for the killing remains unclear. Bates had a history of legal trouble, including previous charges of domestic violence.
