On November 17, 2021, a workplace dispute in Fargo, North Dakota, ended in a tragic shooting that claimed the lives of 32-year-old April Carbone, a Caucasian female, her boyfriend, and their unborn child. The incident occurred at Composite America, a manufacturing facility where Carbone and her boyfriend, Richard Pittman, 43, were employed. Carbone, who was eight months pregnant, died at the scene, while Pittman was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The couple had
moved to the area from Connecticut in 2019. On the day of the shooting, a co-worker, Anthony Reese Jr., 35, of Moorhead, Minnesota, had been involved in an altercation with Pittman. Following the dispute, Reese was fired and escorted from the building. However, he returned a short time later with a handgun.
Upon his return, Reese confronted Pittman and shot him multiple times before turning the gun on Carbone, firing several shots at her as well. Shortly after the shooting, Reese turned himself in at the Fargo Police Department. Investigators later recovered the 9mm semi-automatic pistol he had used.
Anthony Reese Jr. was subsequently charged with three counts of murder for the deaths of April Carbone, Richard Pittman, and their unborn daughter, whom they had named Layla. Reese later pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
