In the quiet neighborhood of Echo Hills in Trussville, Alabama, a grim scene unfolded in the early hours of June 1, 2022, culminating in the death of 82-year-old Jo Ann Henry Harris. The tragic events began when the son of Jo Ann and her 80-year-old husband, John B. Harris, contacted the Trussville Police Department at approximately 1:30 a.m. He relayed a chilling conversation with his father, who had declared his intention to harm his wife and then himself.
Upon their arrival at the
Brookstone Drive residence, law enforcement officers were met with a barricaded subject. John Harris had shut himself inside the home, refusing to communicate with the police. For several hours, negotiators attempted to make contact and de-escalate the volatile situation. At one point, a gunshot was heard from within the house. Eventually, John Harris emerged from the home, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face, and was taken into custody before being transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Once inside the residence, officers made the grim discovery of Jo Ann Harris's body. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the female victim had been beaten and strangled. An indictment later specified the cause of death as strangulation or suffocation. Authorities reported that both Jo Ann and her husband were believed to have been suffering from dementia.
Following his recovery, John B. Harris was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife. He was later indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on a charge of intentional murder. Before he could stand trial for the death of his wife, John Harris passed away.
