The events of December 5th unfolded at a Munford Exxon on Highway 21, where deputies were dispatched around 6:45 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered James inside a 2017 Chevrolet Cruz, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Citizens ER for medical attention but was ultimately pronounced deceased.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Talladega County Sheriff's Office launched a homicide investigation. Witnesses at the scene described a black Jeep that was possibly connected to the incident. Law enforcement located and impounded a vehicle matching that description at the Westgate Apartments the following day, on December 6, 2020.
