On October 21, 2019, in the quiet Prospect Mountain community of Cullman County, Alabama, a violent encounter cut short the life of 76-year-old Thomas 'Tom' DeWille. The male victim, a renowned figure in the world of concert pyrotechnics, was at the residence of his friend, 75-year-old Rollan Frank Edwards, when the attack unfolded. Both DeWille and Edwards, along with a third man, 48-year-old Jody Jay Tudor, were assaulted with a combination of gunfire and knives.
The brutal assault
claimed the lives of both DeWille, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and Edwards, who succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital. Tudor, who was DeWille's husband, was critically injured but survived the attack. The incident stemmed from what authorities described as a longstanding dispute, as all individuals involved were known to each other. DeWille, the founder of Luna Tech, was a pioneer in his field, creating spectacular pyrotechnic effects for legendary music acts such as KISS, Bon Jovi, and Michael Jackson.
Authorities quickly identified Matthew LeWayne Clayton, a 30-year-old neighbor of the victims, as the suspect. Clayton fled the scene but was apprehended by law enforcement following a vehicle crash near Interstate 65. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder and was held at the Cullman County Detention Center.
The legal proceedings against Clayton came to an abrupt end when, on October 25, 2019, he attempted suicide while in custody. He died from his injuries four days later, on October 29, 2019, closing the case and leaving a community to grapple with the tragic and sudden loss of life.
