On October 18, 1989, 22-year-old Donna Cannaday was found shot to death in a ditch near West Road, close to the Chesapeake Regional Airport in Chesapeake, Virginia. Her family and friends discovered her body several miles from her rented home after noticing suspicious circumstances at her residence. Both the front and back doors of her house were left wide open, and her purse and keys were missing. However, her shoes were found by the door, and there were no signs of struggle at the house.
