Known for her passion for dance, she had recently opened her own dance studio, pouring her heart into teaching and becoming an important figure to many children and their families in the community.
On the morning of Wednesday, October 18, 1989, Donna was at her home on Lake
Drummond Causeway. She had worked a part-time job as a receptionist earlier in the day and had returned home to prepare for her afternoon dance classes. When she failed to arrive at the studio, her mother grew concerned and went to check on her. Upon arriving at Donna's rented house, she found a disquieting scene: the front and back doors were wide open, yet there was no sign of Donna. Her shoes were by the front door, but her purse and keys were missing.
Alarmed, family and friends organized search parties to comb the area in hopes of finding her. At around 8 p.m., she was officially reported missing to the Chesapeake police. The search continued through the night, driven by a growing sense of dread. Around midnight, a search party composed of her loved ones made a devastating discovery. Several miles from her home, in a ditch on West Road near the Chesapeake Regional Airport, they found Donna's body. An investigation later determined that she had died from a gunshot wound.
Despite a thorough investigation into her death, no suspects have ever been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the case. The motive for her killing remains a mystery, leaving a void in the lives of her family and the community she had touched. Described by those who knew her as a nice, genuine person with no apparent enemies, her violent death was a shock to everyone. Her case remains an unsolved cold case with the Chesapeake Police Department. In her memory, her family later established Donna Cannaday's Memorial School of Dance.
