On October 23, 2016, 25-year-old Phillip Michael Evans and his close friend, Daniel Haros, were fatally shot outside their residence on Buffalo Springs Drive in Fort Worth, Texas. The incident occurred shortly after they attended a neighbor's Halloween party, where they had a brief, friendly conversation with attendees, including Cary Heath, a 35-year-old middle school science teacher and Air Force veteran.
After the party, Heath allegedly retrieved a rifle, approached Evans and Haros in their front yard, and opened fire, subsequently striking them with the butt of the rifle. Both men died from multiple gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma.

Following the shootings, Heath returned to the party, handed his infant child to another attendee, and confessed to his wife, stating, "This is the last time I will see the baby. I killed two people." Heath was arrested the following day at Permenter Middle School in Cedar Hill, where he taught eighth-grade science. His wife, Tiffany Heath, was later arrested and charged with tampering with evidence, as she allegedly assisted in cleaning up blood and hiding the rifle used in the murders.

In September 2019, a Tarrant County jury convicted Cary Heath of capital murder for the deaths of Evans and Haros. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The motive behind the killings remains unclear, as Heath did not cooperate with investigators, and no definitive reason for the attack was established during the trial.
