On October 12, 2017, Eugene Duke, aged 65, was shot and killed in what appeared to be an attempted robbery while walking home in north Houston. The incident occurred around 10:50 a.m. in the 800 block of Lehman Street. Duke had just left a nearby store on North Shepherd and was walking back to his home when a small four-door, white or gray vehicle, reportedly missing the front left quarter panel, passed by him. Shortly after, an unknown suspect approached Duke and attempted to rob him.
Duke refused to give up his belongings, which led to the suspect shooting him. Duke was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after being found by emergency responders.
The suspect is described as a black male, standing between 5'7" and 5'9" and weighing approximately 140 to 180 pounds. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a white muscle shirt. Surveillance footage showed the suspect vehicle passing Duke just before the confrontation took place. The Houston Police Department released surveillance video and photos of the suspect vehicle to the public in an effort to gather more information and identify the perpetrator.
Authorities continue to appeal for any leads that could assist in solving the case. Crime Stoppers of Houston is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.
