In the pre-dawn hours of September 4, 2008, a strange set of events began to unfold on Dead Indian Memorial Road, a rural stretch winding through the mountains near Ashland, Oregon. A fire was reported at a seasonal cabin, which, upon being extinguished, was found to be empty. But within the hour, another call came in—a second fire, just five miles away.
