In September 2011, the remains of Jack Hall, a man from Rittman, Ohio, were discovered in a wooded area near the Morton Salt property in the city. The remains were found by a hunter, and the discovery sparked an investigation involving local law enforcement and forensic anthropologists. The remains were severely decomposed, making it difficult to determine details like identity and cause of death immediately after they were found. The Wayne County Coroner estimated that the remains had been at the site for over six months before they were discovered.
Forensic anthropologists, led by Dr. Dennis Dirkmaat from Mercyhurst College, were brought in to further investigate the scene. Over several days, more bones and other fragments were found, which helped piece together some aspects of the case. Investigators initially believed that the individual might have been a middle-aged white male based on the bone analysis and the degree of fusion of the skeletal elements. This examination, along with DNA processing, ultimately led to the identification of the remains as those of Jack Hall, a man who had reportedly been missing since 1967.
Jack Hall had last been seen working at a company near the Morton Salt property, which added a tragic element to the discovery, as it indicated that he had been very close to where he worked when he disappeared. The investigation took several years to complete due to the complexities involved in analyzing the remains and cross-referencing with missing persons databases. It wasn’t until around 2014 that his identity was conclusively confirmed through DNA testing and other forensic methods. The identification provided some long-awaited closure for Hall's family, who had been waiting decades for news.
