On May 3, 2016, 25-year-old Jonathan Sorensen died following a tragic incident at a Kmart in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sorensen, a University of New Mexico student, was restrained by three Kmart loss prevention employees who suspected him of shoplifting. According to eyewitnesses, he was held face-down, handcuffed, and restrained for an extended period while pleading for help, repeatedly saying, “I’m sorry” and “I’m scared.” He ultimately suffocated while being restrained.
