A couple is found dead in their home
In the quiet, affluent community of Incline Village, Nevada, a retired couple, Charles Rauer, 63, and his wife Nona, 56, had sought a peaceful life away from the crime of southern Florida. Their dream of a tranquil retirement was shattered in early December 1994. On December 4th, their bodies were discovered in their home on Oriole Way. The couple had been brutally beaten to death with a blunt object in what investigators described as a horrific scene. It is believed they were likely killed on the morning of December 2nd or 3rd. There were no signs of forced entry into their condominium.
The initial investigation into the double homicide left detectives with few leads. The crime scene had been apparently wiped clean of evidence. While thousands of dollars in jewelry remained untouched, a few sentimental items were missing: a bracelet Charles Rauer wore and a video camera. The couple's 1991 Mazda Navajo was also gone, but it was found a couple of days later, covered by a recent snowfall, just a few blocks away in front of the local Justice Court. With no clear motive and little physical evidence, the case quickly grew cold, leaving a community in shock and a family desperate for answers.
Weeks turned into months, and suspicion began to surface within the Rauer family itself. The victims' daughter, Barbara Wilson, started to believe her brother, Charles Rauer Jr., may have been involved. It was reported that his parents had recently cut him off financially. Wilson would later file a wrongful death lawsuit against her brother, which was eventually settled out of court. Despite being a person of interest, the District Attorney's office stated that there was not enough evidence to prove his guilt "beyond a reasonable doubt," and no criminal charges were ever filed against him. DNA that did not belong to the victims was reportedly found at the scene, possibly on the murder weapon, offering a glimmer of hope that advancements in forensic science might one day lead to a breakthrough in this tragic and unsolved case.
