In the summer of 2012, on the morning of July 15th, the body of 28-year-old Javon Brown was discovered lying on the lawn of a home on Winthrop Street in Detroit, Michigan. An African-American male, Brown had been shot multiple times and left to bleed to death. His death was one of 386 homicides that plagued Detroit that year, a grim statistic in a city grappling with a surge in violent crime.
