Adams Jr., a 23-year-old man from Omaha, Nebraska, was killed during a violent roadside confrontation in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on July 11, 1982. The encounter reportedly began across the Missouri River in Omaha following some type of traffic dispute involving Adams and two men riding motorcycles. The confrontation did not end there. It continued into Council Bluffs, where witnesses saw the two motorcyclists arguing in the street near the intersection of North 25th Street and West
Broadway.
As the dispute unfolded, Adams approached one of the men seated on a motorcycle. The rider suddenly produced a firearm and shot him once in the face or head. Adams collapsed in the roadway in the 2400 block of West Broadway, where responding officers found him deceased. The gunman fled north on North 25th Street aboard a candy-apple-red Kawasaki KZ900 motorcycle, leaving behind a crowded scene and numerous people who may have seen at least part of the killing.
Investigators described the suspected shooter as approximately 18 to 20 years old, tall, clean-shaven, with dishwater-blond hair. He was reportedly wearing a white golf-style shirt and blue jeans. A second motorcyclist was also involved in the confrontation, but available reports do not provide a reliable description of him. Although many people were present in a nearby parking lot, the investigation was hindered when witnesses either said they had not seen the shooting or supplied conflicting descriptions of the two men and their motorcycles.
